A simple life is a great act of rebellion in this era of constant hustle.
It doesn’t mean that hustling is evil. However, it is perhaps not for everyone. I am sure there are folks like me who would slow down and carve a simple life that focuses on their few priorities instead of trying to do it all.
And if you resonate with that sentiment, this article is just for you.
What Is Considered A Simple Life?
The definition of a simple life will vary greatly from person to person.
Overall, it is usually a lifestyle of intention. You keep things that hold value to you and do away with most of the rest. Now, that will look different for each one of us.
For instance, to me, a simpler life entails more time with loved ones, working on personal growth, and creating a secure environment for my family.
Why Opt For A Simple Life?
Now, the reason for opting for a simple life will be different for every individual. But, some definitive advantages come with this change.
This lifestyle lets you focus on what’s truly important in your life. At the same time, you can reduce stress and carve out time for your passions. A simpler existence also means having less. And fewer possessions opens up space for other things.
For me, the main reason to make this change was chipping away all the extras in my life. I did not enjoy having a full calendar and always being on the go. I craved a slower pace and time. That is exactly what this lifestyle has helped me achieve.
Tips For Living A Simple Life
1. Prioritize what’s important to you
Make time for the things that matter. Most of us do not have the luxury of leaving all that bothers us at the drop of the hat. However, we can make conscious choices and take little steps toward prioritizing things we truly consider crucial.
2. Set routines
Routines make things easier. At least for me, that is. Knowing what to expect next lets me relax and carry on with my day with a lot less stress nowadays.
3. Practice mindfulness
The whole point of having a simple life is being intentional about it. Mindfulness practices help us get there. You don’t have to be a pro or need perfect techniques for this one. Just try and be present in the moment and savor your experiences.
4. Schedule some “no work” time
Hustle culture demands that we do not have any free time if we want to be successful. I say that we rebel and take some time to do absolutely nothing. Scheduling intentional downtime forces us to slow down and be purposeful.
5. Simplify your meals
Deciding what to feed the family is one herculean task. But we can make it simpler by meal planning and doing some prep work beforehand. Narrow down on a few nutritious meals that you know your family will eat. Keep them on rotation to make your life easier. Additionally, when it comes to meal times, delegate some of the work to others as well.
6. Simplify your wardrobe
A capsule wardrobe or a specific personal style are excellent time savers. They also allow you to make good sartorial choices without much effort. Simplifying our wardrobes is perhaps one of the easiest ways to get into the habit of simple living.
7. Declutter
Owning less is often considered synonymous with a simple life. That is why minimalism and simple living go hand in hand in many cases. If you feel overwhelmed with the amount of things you own, then perhaps a decluttering session is exactly what you need to simplify. You can totally downshift to a slower life.
8. Maintain a budget
Knowing how to budget properly is a non-negotiable life skill. Whether you are operating on a tight purse string or have money to spare, maintaining a budget is always useful. It takes away a lot of financial worry down the line.
9. Make time for your hobbies
As we grow up, many of us stop investing time in our hobbies. What if we didn’t do that? What if we still set aside time each day to practice our hobbies? I am sure that would make us happier.
So, start making time intentionally for the things and activities you loved as a kid. Pick up that paintbrush or take out the musical instrument that’s been collecting dust.
Life will be so much better.
10. Learn to say no
Finally, on the list, learn to say no. None of us need to say yes to every social commitment or be present always. That’s just a way to over-complicate our lives. Learn to take a stand and politely decline obligations when you want to. The world will not end because of that. Rather, you will find some solace.
Peace.
