Books are perhaps one of mankind’s greatest inventions. What would we be without the collective wisdom of the written words? We can find solace, look for answers to life’s most cryptic questions and lose and find ourselves in the pages of our favorite reads. So this time, let’s take a peek into some of the most life-changing books that have profoundly impacted me and many others. Have you read them all? Or are any of these on your wishlist?
My Lifelong Tryst With Reading
I am an avid reader. I have been soaking up books since childhood like my life depends on them. For a long time, I only read fiction because that felt like a refuge. The pages offered me comfort and fed my overly imaginative mind.
Then as I grew up I started leaning towards more non-fiction books. They opened a whole new aspect of living. This is where I found inspiration and answers to a lot of questions I asked myself every day.
I know it all sounds a bit philosophical. But what is life without such occasional intellectual pursuits? They are the little bits of magic in our otherwise mundane existence!

So here’s a list of 5 life-changing books that have powerfully impacted me in some form over the years. These are books that prompted me to take a deeper look into myself and my belief system. I strive to incorporate the learnings from these tomes into my daily life.

1. Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear
Perhaps no list of life-changing books will ever be complete without this one. This book is so good that to me it is a cornerstone read when it comes to improving oneself. I think everyone has something to benefit from it.
This book provides an excellent how-to on ways to self-improvement through consistent habit-building. I, like many others, have found the guidelines provided in this book to be effective and practical time and again.
So if you are on the lookout for a book that can act as a guide on how to improve your life and help you achieve your potential, definitely give this a try.
2. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
A boy named Santiago went on a journey to search for the meaning behind his dreams. And oh what a journey it was!
I remember reading this book when I was in 9th grade. I had had a bad day at school and was not in a great mood. Just the day before my aunt had gifted this book to me and I picked it up as a way to distract myself. I stayed up all night to finish the book.
The Alchemist is one of those books that has left a profound impact on people across generations over the globe. A tale of chasing one’s dreams and finding their soulmate- it is something that tugs at the heartstrings of many.
At the same time, it is also a book of hope. That is why, it is one of the most life-changing books of our time.
3. The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
If you are looking for a book that offers practical advice and makes you laugh along the way, look no further. In this book, Gretchen Rubin writes about things that we feel and yet cannot express as well. She tells us about her journey and as a reader you are bound to feel a certain sense of solidarity with her. As she takes us through the twelve months of changes she implemented in her life, it makes us feel that perhaps we could also do the same.
The Happiness Project is one great life-changing book that got written because the writer had an epiphany on a rainy afternoon on a city bus. Be sure to not miss this one!
4. The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch and Jeffrey Zaslow
More than a decade ago I bought this book at the insistence of a colleague. According to him, this was the book I absolutely needed to read. And boy was he right. The Last Lecture made me question how I see life and more importantly, death. Randy Pausch showed me that perhaps death is not the big, dark thing that I should avoid talking or thinking about at any cost. That perhaps we should give a little more thought to the subject since it is after all the only truth about life.
We die.
And what would you do if you knew this was your last day on earth?
Funnily, when years later I got to know that I would be moving thousands of miles away from my home to this city called Pittsburgh in the US, The Last Lecture was the first thing that popped up in my mind. After all, this is where it happened, and what a coincidence it was that I got to call this city my new home.
5. Tuesdays With Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life’s Greatest Lesson by Mitch Albom
This is a true and heart-warming account of the time spent by the author with his dying professor and mentor. Morrie Schwartz had a difficult life before becoming a professor of Sociology. However, his experiences never turned him bitter. Instead, it instilled in him a venerable sense of compassion and the ability to love people around him. And in his final days, he imparts his experiences and learnings to his mentee, Mitch Albom, before succumbing to his chronic disease (ALS). These lessons have a profound impact on the author and set his life on a different trajectory.
According to me, Tuesdays With Morrie is a must-read name in the list of life-changing books of today.
Will These Books Really Transform Your Life?
That is a question with no fixed answer. These books will offer you food for thought as well as inspiration. However, real change happens from within. It is up to you to take the lessons in these books and turn them into concrete transformations in your life.
After all, life is what we make of it.
Peace.
