The holiday season is a time to cozy up and what better way to do that other than by turning your home into a sanctuary!
The idea of simple living encompasses several practices like owning fewer things or minimalism, increasing self-efficiency, enjoying a holistic approach towards life, etc. However, to me, one of the most important tenets of living simply is being comfortable in my space. And of the foremost ways in which I achieve that is by making my home my safe spot- my sanctuary.
While looking for inspiration on the Internet, I have always found suggestions that are mostly a hit or miss. For example, a common tip is having more pillows and cushions. While this definitely sounds comfy, but it really doesn’t appeal to me as I like my bed and couch to be clutter-free.
Find what appeals to your senses
Comfort means different things to different people. Some find the softness of cushions appealing while others prefer the warmth of hardwood floors. That is the beauty of designing your own sanctuary- it is specific to you only.
Figuring out what specifically makes you feel happy is paramount to creating a cozy place. For example, as mentioned, I prefer less clutter when it comes to my living spaces. At the same time, I like soft textures. The solution? A warm throw on my sofa to snuggle with.
Fill with things you love
The holidays are the perfect time to jazz up your space and what better than filling it up with things you love. Maybe for you, that is your kid’s drawings. Or perhaps that thing is candles. The gist of the matter is to keep things that your love around. That is a sure way to fall in love with your personal space.
For me, that thing is the comforting presence of my books. The fact that I can just pick up and turn the pages of my latest tome is reassuring to me.
Warm and fuzzy
Well, the cushions might not be a bad idea after all, especially if that is your vibe. The holidays are a very good time to snuggle and be comfortable. And what better way than creating a warm and fuzzy surrounding, provided that is your style.
There are so many things in our lives that impart this feeling of warmth though. A string of LED lights, soft music, a cup of hot beverage, woolen socks, even your cat maybe. So hang an extra line of lights while decorating your tree and pour yourself a cup of hot chocolate this Christmas and enjoy your sanctuary to the fullest.
Smells are important
Smells play an important role in our lives. It evokes memories and is capable of altering our moods in almost no time. Hence, it is a crucial component in building your sanctuary as well.
When it comes to the holiday season, the spicy, fall notes are always preferred. You can get scented candles and light them in the evenings. Or maybe get a diffuser and put a few drops of essential oils. I like to use a blend of clove and orange essential oils and it smells amazing.
Another very nice smell that turns your home into a sanctuary is the aroma of foods and beverages. Indulge in a cup or two of homemade hot chocolate. Or have a simmering pot of mulled wine for Christmas. Either way, you can’t go wrong. Your house will smell amazingly inviting.
A comforting presence
Turning a home into a sanctuary entails a feeling of warmth and safety whenever you are in it. An effective way to bring this sentiment is by having things that comfort us. This can be anything like a soft toy from childhood or warm blankets or books. The presence of a familiar and comfortable object soothes our minds and makes us feel calm.
For example, I like displaying my artwork at various places in my house. Looking at them gives me a sense of accomplishment and makes me feel safe. Over the past decade, I have lived in various places- from college hostels to apartments. The only thing that has traveled with me everywhere are my paintings from my childhood.
Home is where the heart is
At the end of the day, our homes should be the places where we can be our truest selves and let go of all the stress that we hold in ourselves. Putting personal touches here and there only enhances the feeling of being in a safe and comfortable environment. Build your own sanctuary in your home by taking inspiration from these suggestions and have a wonderful holiday season.
Till then, peace.
